Through my contemplation over look inside of what appear to be seen, I have started developing unseen or hidden aspect of human consciousness with improvised conversations about ‘uncanny’ and ‘impermanence’ in the in-progress project ‘(t)raum.’
This work is started by looking at a window and a window blind that can commonly be seen around. At the moment of coincidentally seeing an instant stripe formed due to the sunlight that shines through the room penetrating a blind, the strong sensation left a trace on my body. But, by remembering the principal of reflected image formation and the characteristics of light, the instructed information images got rid of the traces like a reflex that had remained in my body. These are languages that grant causality and disturbing factors that stay on superficial sensation. I tried to focus on the intense feeling of sensation that remained in my body for a short while during the art making process, an unknowable glimpse of light that formed a mediating figure between the moment of occurrence and the moment of observation. In order to express the sensation that was felt in the very beginning, I tried to exclude logical conscious and the external forces that bolster subjective embodiment during the performance of making artwork.
The installation work requires the durational commitment of viewers to reveal the delicate nuances between moments to examine the time-based changes, and then allows extending his/her own narrative experience. The viewer first has to face the several phases of agnosia, a disorder characterized by the loss of ability to recognize objects, sounds, shapes – the inability to recognize own body and its attendant confusion, the phenomenon of appropriation of virtual parts of the space. This physical interface re-configures both actual and virtual spaces and various other technological devices as well as the viewers, affording a complex sensorial experience by stepping aside from the event to look at it from a temporal distance, and over time.
The body feels the state of uncertainty due to the sensation of the video and sound which can be distinguished by perception as a feeling of anxiety, which is associated to familiar subjects that constantly change and repeat in the everyday life but at times come to us like unrefined feelings and traces. I wanted to express these senses that cannot be distinguished and the existence of uncertainty which are the self and the subject itself. In fact, existence itself is already uncanny before being visualized by the performance of art because the familiar self and existing surrounding subjects arouse unfamiliarity and nausea.
