I took inspiration from Martha Rosler’s Semiotics of the kitchen and wanted to highlight the gestures that we make with a broom: how we move our hands on the handle, and how we sweep the ground. The broom is an obsolete technology, replaced with Dyson cyclone vacuums and rumbas. I took the Arduino and created code that made the process of sweeping instrumental. The sweeping is enhanced by an amplifier, and the shaft is comprised of Capacitive sensors. On a conceptual level, there are themes that can be discussed related to dirt and domesticity, feminism, patriarchal oppression, and not to mention the performative aspect. I am excited to continue another prototype and explore this intersectionality.
