Biography
Riah Buchanan received a BA in Psychology from Carleton College and an MFA in 2D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her methods involve techniques common in both design and scientific study, such as interviewing subjects, forming and testing hypotheses, and categorizing and creating systems based on observable traits. Her work often uses physical space as a metaphor for psychological space. She has employed the use of several parafictional personas, performing lectures as a founding father, an anthropologist, an ecologist, and a park ranger. Currently, her research is focused on the visual language of data collection in hybrid human/animal/machine networks in uninhabited regions such the deep sea or the high Arctic. She has exhibited at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), George Mason University, A+D Museum, Eyebeam, Public Fiction and Cities of Days in Los Angeles. Her work has been published in Eros magazine in London, wowhuh.com, and Kulturfolger, a Zurich-based publication.
