couloirs... (binaural) by wei yang

Wei Yang’s work couloirs… has been included in this year's Ars Electronica Festival as part of the Ars Electronica 2024 - Sonic Saturday program.

In keeping with the festival theme of “HOPE – who will turn the tide,” the Ars Electronica digital music focus at Anton Bruckner University embarks on a journey into the realm of sonic exploration and inspiration. While music might be seen as a conduit for emotion rather than truth, its capacity to evoke hope and resilience seems boundless.

The title of the piece is borrowed from Alain Resnais' Last Year in Marienbad, where the words and the memory that contains them distort, filter, corroborate, and even construct each other. resulting in the observation that “conversation took place in a vacuum, as if the words meant nothing, as though they could have no meaning. A sentence would be suspended in space, frozen in its flight, and then could resume its journey there or elsewhere."

The composition was composed in 5th order Ambisonic with extensive use of the Ambisonic Toolkit (ATK). It was premiered during the Spatial Audio Gathering in June 2024 (De Montfort University, Leicester, UK), and is scheduled to be performed during PAYSAGES | COMPOSÉS Festival in September 2024 (Grenoble, France) and Sound/Image 2024 at the University of Greenwich in November.
