The Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) at the University of Washington seeks to hire a full-time (100%, 9-month), tenure-track faculty in Data-Driven Arts Practice to begin in September 2020. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Established in 2001, DXARTS is a leading research center for Digital Art. DXARTS’ position within the University of Washington is unusual: it is not a subset of a school of art, engineering or computing, instead it exists as an autonomous department, thus it is able to define its own research and teaching agenda and fully explore the notion of artistic experimentation in the 21st century. Core DXARTS faculty are practicing generative artists and work alongside affiliate faculty from a variety of other departments, including Music, Neuroscience, Art, Law, Dance, Computer Science and Engineering.
DXARTS has an internationally renowned and highly competitive PhD program, populated by emerging artists working with a broad range of materials, ideas and forms. The program emphasizes interdisciplinarity, with students taking classes across the university based upon their own research trajectories. DXARTS asserts that artistic knowledge is a particular type of intellectual and academic inquiry, and that it has value equivalent to that in other disciplines. DXARTS PhD students are expected to work on studio-based research projects, develop any technologies necessary to realize those projects and apply appropriate research methodologies to ensure their work makes a contribution to the field.
Located in the heart of the UW campus, DXARTS has state-of-the art facilities, including 3D sound and video labs, art+brain lab (for interdisciplinary research projects with Neuroscience), a computing lab, as well as production studios, classrooms and a conference room. DXARTS also has a fabrication lab, including digital fabrication tools (laser cutter, CNC router, milling machine, etc.), 3D printers, and a panoply of electronics and mechatronics tools, as well as production and exhibition space.
The successful candidate will:
engage in teaching, research, and service;
teach studio-based classes at both undergraduate and graduate levels. These typically comprise a core sequence of courses that are taught on an annual basis, as well as several advanced/special topics classes. The full-time teaching load at DXARTS consists of five courses, spread over three quarters;
mentor and supervise doctoral students, imparting them the value of artistic research, and teaching them research methodologies and techniques;
do research in data-driven art and produce artistic works based on Data Science methodologies;
participate of DXARTS’ academic and artistic activities such as colloquiums, concerts and exhibitions;
work closely with researchers at the UW eScience Institute (escience.washington.edu) as an Affiliate Faculty;
lead the development of a new curriculum at the intersection of the Arts and Data Science that will be part of the new Minor in Data Science for non-STEM students currently being spearheaded by the eScience Institute under the supervision of UW Provost, Mark Richards.
A PhD, DMA, or foreign equivalent. The successful applicant would be an artist whose practice is strongly informed by data and who has a solid knowledge of Data Science methodologies and related areas of study (such as data analysis, visualization, sonification, artificial intelligence, machine learning, algorithms, data ethics, etc.). The applicant should have a strong record of presenting work nationally and internationally, and a strong portfolio of research-based artistic works.
