About Polaris:

“Polaris is inspired by starlight and our existence in the universe. We have a signal within us that we can use to communicate with other worlds. The Introspective signal that connects all of us might be in a deadzone temporarily, but we should believe that it is within us. Our signal connects us to the universe, and could be something we can see, feel, or touch. Chanee creates a space for us discover the signal within through immersive light and interactive video installations.” -Chanhee Choi

About the artist:

Chanee Choi is a multidisciplinary interactive artist. Her artwork combines Korean traditional crafts and new media forming a hybrid genre focused on immersive experiences.

Chanee invites her audience to take action. She creates an environment to tell the story of growing up in a conservative South Korean home and the expectations surrounding instilled traditional gender roles.

Chanee comes from a long history of gender specific expectations. Where women, historically, were expected to use their skill in embroidery to prove their femininity and viability as a wife. Rejecting these stereotypes, Chanhee uses her embroidery as a contemporary artist, by converting her physical stitched designs into an animated character for her video game.

Chanee Choi is originally from South Korea and now lives, works, and studies in Seattle, Washington. She earned her BFA in Craft Design from Dongduk Women’s University in 2013 and MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Choi is currently a  Ph.D. student  at DXARTS.
